William Deadman

William Deadman and Ellen Heath left England for Canada sometime in the 1840's as they appear on the 1841 England census in Southhampton and the 1851 "Canadian" census in Vaughan Township, York County, "Ontario". The family is still in Vaughan Township for the 1861 census. By the 1881 census, Ellen is a widow living with the 2 youngest children in Tecumseth Township, Simcoe County Ontario.

When did William die? I have been unable to locate a death registration on Ancestry, nor can I find either William or Ellen in the 1871 census. Was Ellen still in Vaughan at that point, or had the family already moved to Tecumseth?

The surname "Deadman" has been appeared in many versions and mis-transcriptions and some later generations did go by "Dedman". None of the known variations or wildcard searches have given me the results I hoped for.

A google search for William Deadman provided a picture of a tombstone for a William Deadman who died in 1864. Time frame would explain some of my questions, BUT the stone also has other names which I have not been able to associate with my Deadmans.

The search continues...

  1. I am also trying to learn more about my Deadman/Dedman relatives. I thought I had hit a dead end until I came across your blog. I am wondering if William Deadman was the father of my great-great grandfather, James Henry Dedman, of Bradford, Ontario, and eventually Toronto. If you would like to you can contact me at amfair@sympatico.ca

  2. Oh Wow! Someone has actually read my blog!

I do have a James Henry Deadman (1848-1931) as a son of William Deadman and Ellen Heath. James was living in Bradford at the time of the 1891 and 1901 census (appears I haven't checked the 1911 census for him yet).
